Deerhunter Koko, London 24/8/09
3/5

London’s hipster contingent is out in force tonight at Koko, but Atlanta, Georgia’s Deerhunter are far from a wantonly uncommerical proposition.
Their tumultuous concoction of bluster, melody and searing emotion isn’t in fact that far removed from the firmly populist likes of, say, Arcade Fire, if certainly a lot less polished.
Often they’ll look even further back in time for inspiration; ‘Little Kids’ from 2008’s much-lauded Microcastle album revolves around a simplistic drone-rock template which matches the woozy menace of The Velvet Underground, with the venue’s notoriously muddy acoustics actually enhancing Deerhunter’s layered atmopsherics.
On that LP’s haunting title track, singer Bradford Cox’s translucent vocals form a key component in his band’s unearthly clamour a la Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue.
