Vitalic – Disco Terminateur EP (Different)
2/5
The blurb that came along with this CD claims this dude Vitalic’s 2005 debut OK Cowboy “pretty much invented a whole new phase of dance music”. I don’t know about that (I genuinely don’t, I was 13 at the time and had probably just bought a Keane record or committed some other youthful folly best consigned to the sewage disposal tank of history), but on the evidence of Disco Terminateur he’s fallen way behind his students.
The EP consists of two tracks and a remix (more a single then, monsieur Vitalic – non?), and the best of the bunch is the latter. Lead ‘Your Disco Song’ is a bit of a mess really – not funky enough to be a disco track, not catchy enough to be the “straightahead* floor-filling pop song” I was promised, and not interesting enough to hold your attention for 200 seconds. The second effort, ‘Terminateur Benelux’, is a bit better, but again a lack of focus makes it all sound a bit cack-handed. The track aims for a gradual build from Hercules and Love Affair-esque cowbell to the kind of hyper-dirty bastard-child of sound that has done so much for Boys Noize and Justice and pretty much anyone European since Daft Punk, but poor execution means that it just sounds a bit cheap, and the faux-drum-attack climax is laughable. There’s a remix after this of ‘Terminateur Benelux’ that manages to weld the menacing glamour aimed for on ‘Your Disco Song’ with the release-attack-release of the original, and does a better job of it than the other two.
That said, the artwork’s nice. Smoky inverted triangles = pretty. Maybe just get a copy for the artwork? You could find some other CD covers you like and make a wall frieze out of them. Don’t open it though.
