Mew No More Stories... (Columbia)
4/5

Let’s be frank from the start. This album is brilliant - brilliant in its innovative approach to prog-rock-meets-experimental soundscapes and brilliant in its sparkling elegancy. It goes without saying that one can tell Mew have been delivering this kind of quality for quite a while now. Considering this band come from Denmark and any mentioning of ‘Scandinavian sound’ makes me really wary and prone to let my guard up to avoid falling into pre-established clichés, it is unbelievably hard not to fall in love with their music.
‘New Terrain’ is a supreme overture to a multi-faceted album that mixes experimental touches of electronica, such as in the powerful yet nostalgic ‘Tricks of the Trade’, dreamy pop as in ‘Beach’ and ‘Cartoons and Macramé Wounds’, nu-ambience with catchy brushes in the musically vast ‘Hawaii’ and consistent pure rock as in ‘Repeater Beater’ and in the sublime and organic ‘Vaccine’. The short 30-second ‘intermissions’ are a true delight of the senses, conveying landscapes of water and wind.
This may be an album that falls in the category of somewhat ‘difficult’ to understand, but if it wasn’t for the entrepreneurship of bands like Mew, music would not evolve… and as they themselves say in one track, ‘Sometimes Life Isn’t Easy’. So No More Stories..., - go get a copy.
