On Histories of Rosenberg EP (Function)
2/5
By: Stephen Maughan
Dum. Dum. Dum Dum goes this one.. You may well be thinking, “what a terrible way to start a review - that dum dum dum dum could mean anything”, but the chances are you've heard this kind of sound before. This 5 piece have a go at creating timeless epic soundscapes with a touch of post rock detachment. The songs have titles like ‘A Calendar Year’. It’s quiet. It’s loud. It's quiet again! Here come the overbearing drums! Next a bit of piano, and a man bellowing his jigsaw lyrics as though he's screaming in a thunderstorm trying (and failing) to be heard above the pounding rain.
You've heard this kind of music before. It was big in the 1970s and use to be called prog rock. Still, this self-titled EP does have a rather nice drawing on the cover of some kind of fox, dog, or even deer. I can't tell exactly, but it gave me false impressions of the quality inside. The truth of the matter is that although On Histories of Rosenberg play their instruments well they lack direction. They may well be huge, and this is after all only their first release, but nothing stands out on this EP. I can't distinguish between song 1 and song 4, which while all pleasant enough adds nothing new to the current music scene. Back to the drawing room, boys?
