The green silk is out, the lip gloss is on, and Lily Allen returns for another sugar-sweet single. ’22’ sees Allen turn in an interesting new direction - a cocktail of jazz and ragtime with her playfully soothing vocals making it a fresh and exciting blend. Flamboyant glides and swoops of the vintage-sounding keyboard and the jazz piano interludes inject a theatrical twist into the sound.
For the first time we get to hear the true strength in Allen’s craft. Through your speakers emerges a passion and sincerity that had somewhat failed to come through in any of her previous singles: they possessed a playfulness that was still great to listen to, just now there is that same tone but with an added ingredient that is making her sparkle and shine.
I never thought I would take to Lily Allen: she seemed too careless, too contrived... Now I can hear a heart behind her voice and can scat-sing with her on the outro. Keep impressing us Allen, who knows what path you’ll turn onto next.
