The Cribs – Cheat On Me (Wichita)

2/5

By: Mariota Spens

Cheat on me’ by The Cribs should be great. After establishing themselves as a classic-style modern Brit-band, with tracks that reminisce of loud nights in crowded pubs, they have previously been a pleasant echo of the eighties brit-rock style. Yet with ‘Cheat On Me’, I feel quite uninspired.

Even the band’s new guitarist - Johnny Marr of The Smiths - hasn’t managed to live up to his previous revolutionary sound from the Eighties. They have, however, always claimed to be a ‘live band’, in that I’m sure by seeing the brothers’ egg bowl haircuts and sweaty bodies in the flesh, with a 5 foot amp blasting in your face, ‘Cheat on Me’ would be a completely different experience.

Ryan’s steamy vocals posses an originality that is being wasted in what is really quite a predictable tune, while an overpowering and repetitive drumbeat teeters the song over the edge in to waters marked ‘wasted potential’. They’ve got the ammunition, now all they need to do is open fire.

This record is a tease: it only makes me want to turn my player off, and go and book tickets to see them live – when said tune might really take flight.

Make it about twice as fast and twice as catchy, and you might be on to something here... but heck, this makes 'Crying Lightning' sound like 'The BIrdy Song'...
