Get Back Guinozzi! – Low Files Tropical / Police & Thieves (Fat Cat)

2/5

By: Liane Escorza

I find it really funny when press releases try so blatantly to make you share an opinion about the music they are promoting.  Funny, because we all know all music is brilliant in the grey suited bosses’ eyes.  So even if I am told ‘Low Files Tropical’ is a summery shot of vibrantly colourful and quirky outsider pop, well, I don’t believe it, and to be perfectly honest, it isn’t.

What it is is OK stuff, worth a couple of spins, but pretty dull, so not many more.  The singing style is stickier than Bretagne butter, and that promised ‘exoticism of reggae, dub, African music, Tropicalia and Cambodian music from the 60’s’, well, it’s shown only in the accompanying writing.

As far as exoticism goes, it is the cover of ‘Police & Thieves’ that brings some sort of innovation, with kazoo solo incorporated and being closer to Junior Murvin’s original than the Clash’s version.
