Lovvers - OCD Go Go Go Girls (Wichita)

4/5

By: Yousif Nur

Lovvers - OCD Go Go Go GirlsTransformations and dramatic changes are a funny and peculiar thing. They often don't work out, unless the ideas that complement the band in question are met with the same kind of integrity and aplomb that the listenership requires.

It's not the case however with Lovvers, as over the past year or so the band have gone through more different influences and inspirational figures than hot dinners. Before, we had a band who took their cues from the likes of Void, Black Flag and a hint of Electric Eels. But a few jaunts across the US later, they've only gone full circle and switched their allegiances to surf rock and a little bit of good old rock 'n' roll. Yes, you didn't just imagine that, although you're very welcome to blink in disbelief.

They namecheck 80's act the Barracudas, unsurprising one might think after the first 2 minutes of opening track 'Creepy Crawl'. It would appear that they have sun-soaked charm and analogue recording techniques for this album brings an altogether peculiar, yet familiar feel of what we're used to from Lovvers. The lead vocals are as muffled and messy as ever, and mix at the same levels in well with fuzzy guitars. Other influences on OCD... include the rock 'n' roll garage punk of The Replacements, a little Iggy Pop and 90's post-hardcore group, Shudder To Think.

Lovvers then have produced an album that's swam against the tide a little, but a solid record has been created nonetheless.
