Air Sing Sang Sung (Virgin)
2/5
By: Liane Escorza
The laptop is playing up on me today. It doesn’t recognize nor pick up names of songs and artists even when connected to the Internet. I’ve checked – it’s plugged in. But I’m determined to hear the tune. So I hit ‘play’. ‘Sing Sang Sung’ it says, by Air. Hold on, is this Air? For real?! No kidding!
This is not the ethereal and modern French pop I know. Nor it is the inventive and legendary and crafty stuff I’ve become accustomed to from the duo. This is meringue - over sugar-coated meringue. There are vocals a la Brigitte Bardot, percussion in the background as if stars were twinkling (yet somehow not as pretty), some synth loop effects and a pretty basic rhythm pattern… but it never gels.
I listen to it more times than necessary because I cannot believe what I hear. This is not the dense and dreamy Air I know. This is just dull, thin air.
