Lofty Heights Eye Contact / Skeleton Apples (Self Released)
4/5
By: Steve Rose
In 1977, amidst the depth of a socio-economic depression, The Buzzcocks released the 'Spiral Scratch Ep', officially the first self released seven inch. Years later in 2009's mild recession this is still the most effective and rewarding way of 'putting something out', as Lofty Heights remind us with their first release.
Essentially the love child of San Franciscan born artisan Gregory Griffin, now residing in London town, Lofty Heights is pure folk pop at its finest. Belying the current trend of N16 lo-fi, and for acoustic artists to sound like Peggy Sue and the Pirates, this seven inch has two pop gems.
Both sides bring to mind the polished narratives of Beirut, Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket et al; albeit smothered in harmonies, banjos and an American knack for storytelling. Both songs lovingly set to tape by aforementioned angel voiced songsmith, at his Manor House based Unit Rad Studios.
In spite of having more in common with Pet Sounds than Never Mind the Bollocks, this self taught virtuoso and his band of merry men's self recorded, self funded and self released slab of musical history is DIY or die.
