Fake Problems Diamond Rings (SideOneDummy)
4/5
By: Liane Escorza
I am intrigued by Fake Problems. Very intrigued.
There’s a bit of Tom Waits, a bit of dark rock and roll, some country, jazzy yet smart saxophone teasers, dirty guitars and an indie-honey twist in their lyrics. It is quite a task to pin them down into one genre, which is excellent news.
This is the type of stuff indie music should be about. It is obvious that ‘Diamond Rings’ has been worked thoroughly even though it feels organic and raw. It helps to have ragged vocal chords like Chris Farren’s but I wouldn’t be surprised if the diet of corn from Omaha in Nebraska, where the album was produced, has something to do with the final sonic shape.
It’s Great to Be Alive is the title of their album and I can’t agree more, if only to have ‘Diamond Rings’ among my collection.
