Ian Brown – Stellify (Polydor)

3/5

By: Liane Escorza

Let’s be honest and straight forward and get this one thing out of the way – there’s nothing special nor groundbreaking to what Ian’s trying to say here, just the usual ‘I see you as an angel…, in everything you do…’ blah. ‘Stellify’ is a song of adoration that doesn’t really move nor aim to engage the listener when it comes to telling the story it wants to tell.

That said, the use of stubborn keyboard chords and a sudden appearance of horns mid-song gives a quirky and refreshing twist to an otherwise pretty dark (dull, basic?) combo. Yet Ian Brown is like that: sometimes cool, sometimes turbulent, sometimes warm, sometimes a maverick, sometimes salty and sometimes sweet – you just never know what type of mixture you’ll get offered.  Maybe then, this is as close to ‘classic Ian’ as it can ever get.
