Kid Harpoon – Back From Beyond (Young Turks)

2/5

By: Bronya Francis

There’s something about this ‘Back From Beyond’ thing that doesn’t sit too well.  It may be the weak vocals that are worryingly reminiscent of sissy pop band The Feeling, or the half-rhymed lyrics: “All I need is a helping hand / Someone safe to guide my landing / Back from, back from, beyond”… whatever, there’s just very little about it that’s particularly enticing.

The guitar riffs are a little tedious, although the mastering, which has presumably deliberately emphasised the acoustic guitar part over the electric guitar, relieves the joke that is “…their bellies start to bloat into great big balloons / while I’m still singing tunes…” (evidence #2 that the lyrics are utterly laughable).

Whilst ‘Back From Beyond’ appeals to lovers of drab pop music (but who knows, maybe you are one?), hi-hat, ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, and although it contains elements that should make it a good single (an attempt at an angsty bridge, and repetition that should nail, cement, laminate this track into your brain cells) it’s just... not great.
