Ladyhawke Magic (Modular)
3/5

“One journey for you but it’s worth it/ One night here with me and it’s magic” … let your new friend fame get to your head have you, Pip? Well, you can’t help feeling that her seeming confidence is justified; after all, she is a very practiced connoisseur of neo-‘80s disco.
Pip Brown’s subject matter- an anonymous American bloke, probably- is “over the Atlantic, baby”, and what’s more, he is “taking [her] for granted, baby”… oh, shame. However, it’s when lyrical content like the above would normally become dampened even more by a mousy, whispery ingénue, that Ladyhawke stomps across the watermark in her muddy Doc Martens- androgenised Patti Smith-stylee- and hollers all over the shop.
‘Magic’ is filled with disco beats à la producer Jeremy Wheatley- indie dancehall in a nutshell, with a shaggy blonde ‘80s wig. The juxtaposition of Ladyhawke’s self-pitying lyrics, and yet raucous synthesized accompaniment, makes this track hard to criticize, really. Whilst the lyrical content is not all that, Ladyhawke has a feisty little blighter of a voice and that’s what makes ‘Magic’ slightly good as opposed to what it potentially could have been: a little bit naff.
