Los Campesinos! There Are Listed Buildings (Wichita)
4/5

Ingredients for Twee Pie: One part glockenspiel, two parts ‘ooh’ or ‘aah’ (however ‘bah’ will suffice), one part girl singer (lead or backing). If the above were an accurate recipe for an example of the new genre we’re all very fully aware of, then you could say that the ‘There Are Listed Buildings’ would make a somewhat decent foodstuff.
However sweet some elements in this single may be, they don’t half give it some welly in ‘There Are Listed Buildings’, with Gareth’s almost gritty vocals, scratchily singing “I think I’d do it for love if it weren’t for the money,/ I’ll take any scraps that you can give”. The band creates almost orchestral music, given the sheer number of them- Los Campesinos! is comprised of around seven whole Welsh people!
Although this lively little ditty is not particularly fitting with this time in the musical calendar- not at all succumbing to the pressures of synth pop and psychedelia- it is nevertheless a pleasing belter of a single, a welcome change from the latest sonic trends.
