Die! Die! Die! - Buffalo Bar, London 8/9/09

Tonight's show is a very rare example in this day and age of just why authentic, visceral and abrasive punk rock is still vital.
New Zealand three-piece Die! Die! Die! of late have made serious headway in getting in to the hearts and minds of discernable types and those that are disconcerted with the label ‘punk’ having connotations with screamo/hair/lip rings et al. They’re pretty much the closest thing to Fugazi that we have at the moment, as their tendencies across the musical scope range from an atmospheric wall of sound in 'People Talk' to the stark, minimalist 'A.T.T.I.T.U.D.' - a song based around drums and an unapologetically simplistic bassline.
But when they want to go all out, by God they bloody can, with 'Blue Skies' prompting a small yet dedicated legion of fans to slam into one another mercilessly down in front. It also pleases us to note that much new material from an as-of-yet incomplete new album was showcased tonight, indicating a leaning towards what might well be their crossover record. Yet Die! Die! Die! stand to remain as fiercely independent and uncompromising as ever, and with this Buffalo Bar show demonstrating just how in your face the new stuff is, we think they’ll be just fine.
