Marina and The Diamonds is Marina, featuring Marina, and us people, apparently being The Diamonds. Our supposed involvement is something to get excited about, because in honesty there’s really little else in ‘Hollywood’ to sweep on off one’s feet, regardless of it being a catchy little number that’ll make you want to act like one of the silly, shallow prats in 90210. Why?
Marina is Marina, our goddess, the dazzling heroine, the delicious and glamorous wannabe Katy Perry et al (you know the long list). It is, as the song shows and Marina sings, all about ‘Hollywood’. The song seems to have a barely hidden agenda, one that might read like this, if ever transcribed...
I mean… do you think I am stupid? I am the formidable Marina and The Diamonds! Infectious like a rash, grand like Kate Bush, but something more, and not just in the shoulder pads. I am here to stay, I say!
I nevertheless foresee a tantrum rather than an act of assertion, a second or third attempt to eat the cake of commercialism, and a final fall in Hollywood’s glittery abyss. Still, early days. We’ll see.
