Los Campesinos! Romance Is Boring (Wichita)
3/5
By: Hayley Leaver
Following a line-up shake-up, that old favourite bit of twee bring forth a new 45 in the form of new album title track, ‘Romance Is Boring’. Perhaps a little less cute but every bit as whimsical as Los Campesinos!’s earlier offerings, this new album taster heralds those same crashing choruses loved by sweaty scenesters since the first time ‘You! Me! Dancing!’ got plimsolls a-shuffling all those years (four!) ago.
A shiny new female vocal has done nothing to affect that cuddly feeling, hiding an often snappy pessimism beneath its charming exterior– if anything, it has slightly improved the experience altogether.
Complete with the essential shouty bit oh-so recognisably Los Campesinos!, their new LP is clearly made from the same recipe as their first two records and will probably have the same success at indie nights throughout the land. Catchy and charming, Gareth and co. are every bit as kitsch as they have ever been; but maybe, just maybe, we’re starting to have had enough of it...
