Sliding from edgy R&B bass lines to glowing choral outbursts, the latest offering from Merrill Garbus heralds that same lo-fi feel of long-ago forgotten recordings a certain Mr Longstreth could have coughed up. Thus it should come as no surprise that Tune-Yards have just completed a set of dates with those unclean Projectors; their sound is not miles apart in its at times startling, genre-defying style.
‘Real Live Flesh’ begins with a softly mewing introduction, cutting in with complex, almost Timberlake melodies, leaving you unsure as to whether you should attempt some gawky bump ‘n grind moves or muster up some teenage angst.
The EP’s second track, ‘Youth’, perhaps has more to offer with undeniably familiar guitar riffs splicing deliciously smooth vocals. Garbus’ music portrays a brainstorm of styles, discretely utilising musical aptitude in an apparently ramshackle but evidently intelligent manner. Receiving much acclaim for her debut album, this recent effort proves that a chance to witness one of a few upcoming UK dates should be snapped up in an instant.
