Errors – Come Down With Me (Rock Action)

4/5

By: Stephen Maughan

We, that is Rockfeedback, didn't seem to think too much of the first Errors album.  As such, the prospect of listening to another ten songs of below average and droning  electronic-indie all day didn't really appeal to me.  So it’s even more pleasing to report Come Down With Me is not only an improvement on their first LP, but actually is a rather glorious affair that should cast doubt on those who dismissed this band as merely over ambitious Mogwai copycats (let's not forget they are signed to Mogwai's own label, Rock Action).

Errors have created a catchy and adventurous album that, other bands take note, is jam-packed with melody, artistic experiments, and – though this is an overused word – sonic soundscapes that take you on a vivid journey in the style of Daft Punk or Leftfield at their height. Saying that, the greatest joy of this beautifully simple record comes in the fact that Errors seem to have, beyond all expectation, come up with their own unique sound, somehow without altering their style too much.

Comes Down With Me has something classical about it.  By that I mean the type that you get if you edge your radio dial a little beyond the traditional BBC stations to the world of Classic FM. I've been up a lot recently at 3 or 4 in the morning, feeding an over-excited baby, listening to classical radio. The music Errors deliver here is not a million miles away from the calming, but ambitious delights to be found in Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, and Hoffmann. I think that must be the first time those composers have been lucky enough to grace the pages of rockfeedback, and don't worry, the guitars and electronic effects add both a urgency and passion to the album (particularly on the synth led 'Germany', and the swooning melody 'Beards'). Still, you can bet Mozart, if he were alive, would be getting down to this at the Salzburg Barfly of a Friday night.

Come Down With Me proves that, if proof were ever needed, lyrics are really not essential in the make-up of a song. Errors have created a poetic sound, one of the hardest things to do in music. A few repetitive moments, and the odd feeling of detachment here and there, can't take away from this greatly enjoyable, exciting album.
