Villagers The Hollow Kind EP (Any Other City)
3/5

Interesting things can happen on trains. Some are less fun than others; trains get delayed, trains get cancelled. Trains crash. But occasionally things run smoothly and you can get chatting to completely random strangers who turn out to be very talented singer-songwriters.
For me, Villagers, aka Conor O'Brien, is one of those random strangers. Newly signed to Domino, his early EP 'The Hollow Kind' is a perfect display of his strengths and weaknesses. He has the ability to adapt his voice in a way that makes it sound unique on each song, but that does not always work in his favour.
‘Pieces’ is a wonderful example of his songwriting abilities. An opening heavy with lush strings brings a 50s feel, evocative of old black and white movies. These are abruptly dropped giving the track a modern twist, even if it is done in a slightly clumsy way, as does the distortion heavy closing which contrasts beautifully with the dreamy opening.
‘The Meaning of the Ritual’ is a weaker moment. Quiet and slow it constantly feels like it is going to build into something bigger and bolder. Unfortunately this is a promise that is never fulfilled. O’Brien’s voice lacks authority particularly in the second half of the track. However, behind the annoying echo effect is a very well written song and his talent is clearly evident – it’s just that it has not been particularly well executed.
The two tracks that bookend the EP both excellently show off what it is Villagers do best. Opener ‘Down Under the Sea’ acts as a perfect introduction to the artist. It has the strength to make an immediate impact and the powerful drumbeat contrasts wonderfully with his unique voice.
Closing track ‘The Sun Is Hanging from a String’ is a welcome return to form after the weaker ‘Meaning of the Ritual’. While the production is fairly messy and it’s not quite 100%, the potential is there, as it is throughout the whole EP. These four tracks show Villagers and an incredibly talented musician who has the ability to produce songs that are simultaneously imposing and heart-breakingly beautiful. Definitely my favourite thing about that train journey.
