Florence & The Machine Dog Days Are Over (Island)

3/5

By: Stephen Maughan

Almost two and a half years since its original release, ‘Dog Days Are Over’ is with us again.  In 2008 this catchy, slightly annoying track peaked at number 89 in the charts before fizzling away. Island, urged on by the phenomenal success of Florence & The Machine’s number one album, world tour, Brit and Mercury prize nominations, for some reason felt like it was worth giving it another shot. Kerching!

Now, the problem is avoiding this song rather than not being able to find it. Heavily featured on radio stations and seemingly the entire British media (ranging from The Sun’s website to Radio 4's Women's Hour  where Florence was recently a popular guest), it seems inevitable this time around ‘Dog Days...’ will be a success, and can only add to the zillion + sales of album, Lungs.

Which is all fine – there’s no point getting angry about the return of a rather harmless little pop tune, one that relies heavily on Florence's powerful vocal delivery, snapping and snarling around this drum-and-piano led number.  Ms Welch celebrates that “the dog days are over, and the horses are coming”... and before you could mention Patti Smith, the song is over. It’s a pleasant enough experience, but one which falls short of repeating the glory of a ‘Kiss with a Fist’.
