The Fall – Bury (Domino)

3/5

By: Liane Escorza

I’m of the opinion that The Fall’s vast legacy, body of work and influence means nothing if the existence of their current work is not justified. Thankfully then, latest single ‘Bury’, from the much anticipated album Your Future Our Clutter, is a perfect surrealist post-punk anthem, where Mark E. Smith once again proves a demon of lyricism, a master of the middle ground between singing and spoken word.

On ‘Bury’, Smith’s street poetry curdles over penetrating keyboards that could cause tinnitus on stage. The drums perforate, determined, and the guitar swirl on and off providing the sustainability for the chorus.  It’s short, messy, a near-to-drunken statement, a ringing doorbell of youthful memories - both a knock-out of modern adrenaline and a shot of legendary punk wisdom.
