Danny and the Champions of the World – Street of Our Time (Loose)

2/5

By: Liane Escorza

Danny George Wilson, formerly from Grand Drive, has paired up with (or invented, more likely) The Champions of the World once more to release their second album Streets of Our Time. The title of the album is directly related to the stories of growing up, getting old, disappointments encountered along the way and dreams yet to come true all detailed in the record’s lyrical content. But unfortunately, Streets... doesn’t capture the feeling musically.

Even though the melodies present are slightly more upbeat than your average, with lilting guitar strokes, background choruses, harmonicas and lively percussion, the first and only striking thing about this music is, sadly, its flatness.  Each song plays on and moves to the next leaving nothing but a trail of blankness; there is pretty much nothing memorable here.

‘Henry the Van’ and ‘Parakeets’, the first and last songs on Streets Of Out Time, are the moments where Danny and his Champions come closest to casting magic spells, but everything in between is a blur.  Those tracks are passers-by like Danny must have been in the places he sings of and the people he’s met.  You’re left wishing that Streets of Our Time was a little closer in its musical sentiments to the actual realities of life.
