Crackout - 'Oh No!' (Hut)

2/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Dead Kennedys - 'Live At The Deaf Club'

Touted for big-ish things in some quarters a while back, brittle Bucks trio Crackout have since found themselves in the position of perennial nearly-men. Destined for a role as mere Brit rock squad players, they've been forced to remain in the wings whilst their more eminent contemporaries - Hundred Reasons, Lostprophets, Hell Is For Heroes, even Biffy Clyro, claim the kudos and record sales.

'Oh No!' isn't going to shatter Crackout's image as a compact, competent but hardly exceptional outfit. Their sophomore LP is a decent record, yes, but Crackout's straightforward approach, devoid of any real personal nuance or distinguishing characteristics isn't that interesting.

Their singer sounding uncannily like Robert Smith further impedes Crackout's attempts at originality; and the fact that frontman Steven Eagles cites The Cure as his all-time favourite band in a bio on the band's official site shouldn't come as much of a surprise after listening to his quivering vocal stylings on this LP. Whilst the occasional notable moment does crop up on 'Oh No!'; the resolute 'This Is What We Do' , the introspective 'Freakin' All Night' and woozy Closer 'Feel at Home', there isn't enough herein to truly make Crackout stand out.
