If you wanted a 21st century band to soundtrack a journey through the rough old Mississippi delta, one would probably plump for The Black Keys. With Dan Auerbach’s rusty, soulful vocals and swinging guitar riffs combining with Patrick Carney’s dirty, dirty drumming, it’s no surprise Danger Mouse said yes to working with them again after the success of their Attack & Release album in 2008. This time they are back with Brothers, and ‘Tighten Up’ is their first single from it.
‘Tighten Up’ is a hot tune, a catchy psychedelic ride, a shot of tequila in an arid desert. It moves upwards and downwards and drills in like heavy tobacco perfume and whisky tar. It’s distilled blues with rock aromas and has been produced in ethereal simplicity but with charging passion, a work of art emerging from silence – no warnings, no hyped-up expectations, no chance for prejudgments.
Man, The Black Keys are something else…
