To Rococo Rot Forwardness Fridays (Domino)
2/5
By: Stephen Maughan
The Berlin electro avant garde sound strikes again, with its subtle blend of beats, mathematical genius, and out-of-world sounds. To Rococo Rot, already on their seventh album, have long taken the baton from Kraftwerk and tried to update it with their a modern twist.
It's a shame this little EP isn't particularly rewarding, and as much as we can admire their ability, mixing analogue and digital with abstract and washed with an overflowing Brian Eno influence, it's not high art – for this is what music like this attempts to be – at least not in the same way that the ‘werk and Eno have been responsible for.
I don't often write this, but the best part of ‘Forwardness Fridays’ is hearing Stefan Schnider's bass, which to my ears out performs all the electric experiments and instrumental drum playing. It feels like the heartbeat to this record – too bad it's the only thing going for it.
