Future Islands – In The Fall (Thrill Jockey)

4/5

By: Stephen Maughan

Future Islands consist of members with names like J. Gerrit Welmers, and Samuel T. Herring, which kind of makes them feel like 19th Century American pioneers. Their music on one hand feels like it was composed in the year 1837, and another in 2250.

As an EP, it’s one of those that's hard to pin down - all I can really do is admire its infectious nature and let myself be drawn into the swirling world of Future Islands. I don't know if I need x-ray specs to appreciate it fully, or if my eyes are playing tricks on me, but this mix of eccentricity and hints of chamber pop comes close to being mind blowing.  Herring's voice sounds like a grizzlybear overdosed on gunshy records, “you've got a lot to learn” he barks before declaring “I am the Tin Man!”

To these ears, it's the most far out EP of the year, and I wait baited breath for what Future Islands will do on their forthcoming album. Until then, I think I need a lie down...
