Hot Club De Paris - The Rise and Inevitable Fall of the High School Suicide Cluster Band (Moshi Moshi)

Indie. A word which has plagued and haunted music for decades. A movement which has seen the rise and fall of countless number of ‘The’ bands, all sharing that same dishevelled image of tattered skinny jeans, purposefully unkempt hair, singing about some girl with a polka dot dress and a weird, quirky name. Something like Patricia. Or Sue. Or Maurine.
Bands like The Pigeon Detectives, The Paddingtons and Hot Hot Heat all experienced the dubious glory of being in an Indie band, soon falling off their cloud of disillusionment and hurtling back to earth as quickly as a lead balloon falls from the sky. Crash. Splat. Finished. Done with. Over. Goodbye. Thanks for coming. You’ve been distinctly average.
Although Hot Club de Paris are indeed an indie band, complete with skinny jeans, lyrics about some girl with a dodgy name and high up the fretboard riffs, they do it awfully well. The Rise and Inevitable Fall of the High School Suicide Cluster Band is an EP about which no indie lover in the land will be disappointed. Hot Club de Paris are not a band attempting to revive any indie scene (which hit us round the face like a wet fish) but are a band who celebrate with a catchy pop nous, singing with energy and playing with passion. They’re the most amazing thing to have come out of Liverpool in ages. And that includes Jennifer Ellison.
