Clock Opera – A Piece Of String (Maman)

5/5

By: Liane Escorza

So you think that actions like chopping and dicing and whacking and mixing are all just for pretentious TV chefs? Well, enter Clock Opera - that is, enter Guy Connelly, with his superb single ‘A Piece of String’.

There’s nothing pretentious about this broth - only a treat that’s utterly tasty, mesmerizing and a supreme delight to the senses. ‘A Piece of String’ is, much like their other tracks, formed by playing their instruments and singing their vocals (so far so ‘whatever’, yes) but then transformed by slicing them into tiny pieces before re-assembling them into beeping, electro-tribal rhythmic pop with finesse and gusto.

‘A Piece of String’ follows their impressive debut single ‘White Noise’, and also comprises  of homemade samples, cut-up guitars and jagged synths, though it’s a more jittering, colourful and cheerily melodic affair than its predecessor.  Yet like many of the most delicious meals in the fanciest of restaurants, ‘A Piece Of String’ looks and feels ice cool, even somewhat mechanic on the outside. However once you dig your spoon in –wrongly expecting to find something bland in their recipe– you will hit carbonated sugar bubbling with frenetic excitement, the most luxurious and fizziest of pleasures to my senses in a while.
