Booka Shade – More! (Get Physical)

2/5

By: Liane Escorza

n comparison to previous works Movements and The Sun & The Neon Light, German duo Booka Shade here are found longing for more dance orientated beats and melodies after their success of late at scouring with expertise all territories of electro-house, minimal, and Metro Area-style disco. On More! however, even though their intentions are clear, their capacity to make groundbreaking sonic journeys rather than standard songs has clearly been impaired.

Too many moments here are like ‘Divine’, one of those fillers that smell of disappointment from the start. The vocals being hazy, flat and the lyrics irritating, it is followed by the dispassionate ‘Scaramanga’ and ‘L.A.tely’, the latter having more in the way of superficially unimaginative bass lines than there is a natural amount of arresting beauty on your average Californian supermodel’s face.

There’s a self enforced lack of initiative here, and it’s a real shame - tunes like ‘Regenerate’, a tropical and exotic attempt with near-to melodic layers; ‘Havana Sex Dwarf’, the metallic starter that promises to heat up the dance floor, and more characteristic ‘Teenage Man’ are fine examples of old Booka Shade nous at work.  Yet they can’t make up for the loss of shape and form experienced across the record – there may be More! to dance to, but there’s much less spark than there was in the old days.
