Band of Horses The Roundhouse, London 9/6/10
3/5

Taking the stage to the unlikely strains of Phil Collins, Band of Horses' soaring, if slightly hoary roots-rock is aimed at venues far larger that The Roundhouse.
Waist coated singer Ben Bridwell is all 'GOODEVENIN'EVERYBODY!' and 'HOWY'ALLDOIN'?, whilst behind him plays footage apparently supplied by the Pacific Northwest tourist board (BoH formed in Seattle but have since relocated to South Carolina.)
In some ways, the fivesome wish to have their cake and eat it: retaining the affections of the cool set who cluck their tongues, stroke their ATP festival line ups, and talk about "What's to be done with the future of Chillwave?", whereas The Horses themselves just want to be Kings of Leon.
'Older' from this year's 'Infinite Arms' runs a nice line in Crosby, Stills & Nash-style harmonies and oldie 'The Great Salt Lake' becomes an organ-immersed piledriver, but 'Compliments', despite a big radio push earlier in the year, isn't quite their 'Use Somebody' or 'Sex On Fire.'
After a trio of albums, it might not quite be make or break time for Band of Horses, but they'll soon need to speed up to a gallop to avoid a trip to the glue factory...
