Nectarine No. 9 - 'I Love Total Destruction'

Peel favourite Nectarine No.9 set free their fifth release in the form of 'I Love Total Destruction' on lo-fi, stalwart label, Beggars Banquet.

Following on from last year's all-instrumental EP 'Society Is A Carnivorous Flower', this time the outfit are joined by ex-Pop Group majordomo and free-jazz spirit, Gareth Sager and his contribution of fuzz clarinet and piano... and...seemingly the Edinburgh gaggle, led by ex-Fire Engines frontman Davy Henderson (vocals/guitar)... all continuing to do what they do best - 'mercurial underground guitar-noir'.

Confused, epileptic, disabled yet not disgruntled rock, this is highly fitting to the shows that the group have earned enough prestige, admiration and general esteem to be invited to play - i.e. Doctor of his art, Mr Peel's Meltdown Festival at the Royal Festival Hall. Messy, muddled and blurry, but without the headache, 'I Love...' reaches aeronautic heights, without the vertigo, through way of vitriolic musicianship and intricate, shape-shifting structures.

If trance-like listening states are your bag then give this a whirl - yet if the idea of just under forty minutes of constant movement and unpredictability frankly makes you feel a bit car-sick, then there's always a 5ive 'Greatest Hits' album not too far away.
