“This week NME have been following us around for two days taking our photo. I reminded them that in 2003 when You Forgot It In People came out they called us ‘Canadian paedophiles’... and look at us now! What a difference seven years make.”

Joking aside, Kevin Drew is right. Although admittedly Broken Social Scene hasn’t reached the dizzy heights of success they surely deserve, they have come pretty far in their career and from their idiosyncratic performance, you can tell they’re darn happy with being the band they are in 2010. Mind you, they have had a five year break between the last LP and new album Forgiveness Rock Record, and it really does show in their zealous and wholly endearing stage presence.

This particular show threw forward a healthy mix of new songs, such as opener and new favourite ‘World Sick’, but it was a set still peppered with old crowd pleasers such as ‘KC Accidental’, which drummer Justin Peroff requests the band play despite its absence from the official set-list. They also recruit a member of the audience to help with ‘Forced to Love’, as Drew freely admits that he finds memorising his own lyrics tricky and needs someone there to hold them up for him. Enter the most energetic crowd member ever, who is of little help to Drew as he spends the duration of the song cavorting about the stage and temporarily becoming the centre of attention. His moves can’t rival that of Brendan Canning though, a man most definitely enjoying himself through the medium of dance.

On this particular evening, the band also favour elongating their songs, case in point being ‘Meet Me In The Basement’, where BSS  repeatedly tease with false endings until all members leave Kevin Drew on stage to play a heart rendering version of ‘Lover’s Spit’. However, it’s the final song, ‘It’s All Gonna Break’, which really steals the show resulting in an almighty climax that left all in attendance wanting more - despite its length.
