Jonjo Feather Is Or Ok (Cargo)
4/5

Lo-fi indie is enjoying a good old surge in bands that seem to be quite good at it these days, what with The Strange Boys, Tame Impala, et al creating a buzz of distortion all over the blogosphere (for want of a much better word). Surprise, surprise - British offerings worth listening to are few and far between, and so when a home-grown treat such as Jonjo Feather’s Is Or Ok pops its shoegazey head into the slipstream, it’s easy to let it float by unnoticed.
The irksome appeal of Beck combined with the hazy vigour of My Bloody Valentine, Is Or Ok could easily be so lulling that it should induce some form of coma, but then a heave of murky bass will kick in and shake things up again. Channelling the summery jangle popularised by Girls, Feather is less of the childhood-in-a-cult and more of the laidback, Jarvis-esque cool in tracks such as ‘Little Spark’.
However, it’s the latter half of the album that really hits every nail on the head, ‘I Suppose’ signalling the start of something gloomier. ‘Hypnotise Me’ revels in the sullen purr of Feather’s vocals, growlingly reminiscent of something Josh Homme might whack out, while ‘Rickenbacker Baby’ is so infectiously outstanding it suggests the brilliance of which Feather is capable may transcend the rest of the lo-fi hordes.
