Crocodiles – Sleep Forever EP (Fat Possum)
4/5
By: Chris Jones
This record from Crocodiles, made in California and produced by James Ford (Klaxons/Arctic Monkeys), is a catchy triumph of California dreaminess; euphoric and carefree. It’s in essence an ode to the sun.
Throughout the tune creamy synthesised echoes offer a trippy backdrop for the lazing bass line, which in turn props up the drifting cadence of the dreamy lyrics until they erupt into the chorus. The rich ascent of the chorus is like a call to the summer sun, following the rays back up to the source.
With an indulgent quality this record succeeds in lifting you up and floating you through a canopy of gentle lyrics and a catchy melody, which will have you singing along with your eyes shut and your imagination wide open.
The sun would do well not to blush amidst the flattery heaped upon it by Crocodiles; even Ra himself would have cracked a smile.
