!!! AM/FM (Warp)

What to write about !!!? I’ve always like their music, but I never feel like a fan. I’ve seen them live a couple of times, but I can’t remember too much about it. It’s an awful thing to say about a band, but there is just something missing from what they do. I can’t figure out what it is, but that missing spark is what stops ‘AM/FM’ from really winning me round.
It’s a brilliantly produced piece of dance-punk, driving and percussive with searing guitars and synths that fly in and out of breakdowns. The bass line is so slick it makes my stomach flutter. The vocal is instantly recognisable with that glorious slack US lilt. And yet I’m still struggling to get excited about pressing play.
In a world where dance-punk has seemingly dissipated and the minimal, adventurous producers are stealing ears worldwide, perhaps what !!! are lacking is just a little innovation. Something new to write home about.
