Archie Bronson Outfit Hoola (Domino)
3/5

At the time of their rapturously received 2006 debut Derdang Derdang, Archie Bronson Outfit’s refreshing approach to stripping garage rock to its purest state and incorporating pop affliction was a revelation. And yet, revival of a genre is not really what the Archies had in mind.
This realisation materialises when listening to ‘Hoola’. Utilising plenty of synths, dance beats and emotional punk intensity, it finds the band jumping away from the rawness of their early work whilst remaining attached to its essence through an imaginary umbilical cord. Windett’s voice trembles and vibrates, guitar strings are scraped, background female vocals sway up and down, and there’s an overall feeling of urgency and anxiety in the never-ending loops. But the final teasing scale of the keyboards is an open statement that A.B.O. are on their way to creating a new, more personal sound. We might have to wait just a little longer then to find out the nature of this remarkable band’s true identity.
