Gayngs - The Gaudy Side of Town (Jagjaguwar)

3/5

By: Samuel Smith

Can you really call a band a 'supergroup' if it's formed up of an oscilating team of relatively well-known indie darlings and much hyped buzz bands? I mean, on paper, Gayngs should be every bloggers salty twisted sheet - featuring members of Bon Iver, Megafun and Solid Gold - thankfully, the groups saving grace is that it isn't any of these musicians that claim centre stage, but the production itself.

Gayngs are very much a studio collective. A very talented, well connected studio collective, but like Eno with Talking Heads, it was the studio processes, rather than musicianship, which audibly made the record. It is the subways of reverbed vocals, beds of oscillating synths and popped bass that make this sigh of a song really stand out. However, the lasting feeling is that, as nice as it is, the studio tom-trickery leaves you feeling a little cheap. A little more substance next time please.
