Bright Eyes / Neva Dinova - 'One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels' (Saddle Creek)
4/5

'Tripped into a hole/I dug every word'; upon Bright Eyes' - aka Conor Oberst - latest venture, we receive six recordings co-penned with fellow Omaha-ites Neva Dinova. And, like anything ever received the way of Oberst (barring his more blistering, yet no less admirable Desaparecidos project), his latest contributions strive to obtain a stealthy, tingling grandeur without losing any of the humbleness that entails and is defined by his cracking vocal and taut fragility.
Neva Dinova contribute the alt.country stakes, with some nice slide-guitar and scintillating cello, and Oberst the depth of soul, and it all combines to best effect amidst the distorted vox and shady recalling which forms fourth track, 'I'll Be Your Friend', what with its church organ and startling series of lines ('You talk when you're drunk like you're standing in front of a microphone' / 'But I guess it's a success, we're at our best when you're upset').
Any tempered fears of too many/few ideas vying for a spot by either/both contributors - disregard 'em. With fellow hometowners ND and BE, it's an inspired coalition.
