Everything Everything – Schoolin’ (Polydor)

5/5

By: Richard Brant

Frantic, searching, muddled, progressive, pop, jazz, RnB and funk, are just some of the words to describe Everything Everything’s wild, synapse illuminating style.  Somewhere between the indie RnB of TV on the Radio and the tropical testicular defying Wild Beasts lies Everything Everything, a band not happy with tags or pigeon holing. They’ve carved their own little musical enclave with front man Jonathon Higgs voice tip toeing acrobatically from modal to falsetto with cryptically speedy thought provoking lyrics, over a constantly evolving movement based conglomerate of musical styles.

In this aspect ‘Schoolin’’ is no different from previous released singles that have been leading up to the hotly anticipated Man Alive, due out in August – it’s a funk driven RnB number, with slight jazz influenced quips filled with backing strings and dancing guitars. You might need the Enigma to decode some of the more outlandish, mind splurge style lyrics, but a thematic inability to learn of existence sits within, with such gems as “Remember how men would understand the heavens, but leaving those street lights on, you can’t see nothing there.”
