Kill It Kid - Camden Barfly, London – 12/8/10

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

‘In the beginning, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, which begat the publishing of “Memphis Blues” by Hart Wand in 1912 (often credited as the first blues title), which begat W.C. Handy writing “St. Louis Blues” (often credited as the first real blues song) in 1914….’

The Rock Bible – Unholy Scripture for Fans & Bands by Henry H. Owings

Whilst their peers may rewind just a few years to derive inspiration, Bath quintet Kill It Kid are taking it back to the start of Rock n’ Roll Genesis.

Shaggy-haired singer Chris Turpin resembles a fresh faced X-Factor hopeful more than a gravel-throated neo-bluesman, but any band named after a Blind Willie McTell track (‘Are there any Blind Willie McTell fans in tonight?’ he enquires, optimistically) are likely to have rather broader horizons.

‘Burst It Backs’, perhaps the pick of their 2009 well-received eponymous debut, is a cavorting, Dexys Midnight Runners-meets-Led Zeppelin skylark, whilst closer ‘Let My Feet Fall Heavy’ sounds like 'Dazed & Confused' being reinterpreted by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Kill It Kid are barely on stage for 40 minutes tonight, but there’s potential aplenty in these unlikely sons and daughters of the Avon delta.
