Various Artists Young & Lost Club Compilation (Young And Lost Club)
4/5
By: Jen Long
Welcome to the world of Young and Lost Club. Founded five years ago by Nadia Dahlawi and Sara Jade, it’s a label that’s grown to become synonymous with exciting, great new music. What started as a club night grew into a record label, and now to celebrate the release of their fiftieth single YALC are putting out a compilation containing thirty-two you may have missed.
Looking down the track listing is a bit like reading a who’s who of UK indie. There’s Johnny Flynn, Bombay Bicycle Club, Noah and The Whale and Everything Everything, but there’s also a few lesser known names; Alan Pownall, Othellow Woolf and Lunar Youth. And, the best bit, the OHMYGODDOYOUREMEMBERTHEM names; Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong, Cazals, Larrkin Love.
The thing that I quite like about this compilation is how personal it feels. It’s very London centric, but there are no attempts to hide it. Instead, it’s worn like a very honourable pin badge. The press release reads, “It’s the sound, simply, of being young and lost in London.“ I like listening to it thinking about going to gigs in 2007 and trying to remember what happened to some of the bands, or in other cases, remembering how exciting it was to hear them for the first time.
The quality of the compilation is actually really high. There are the a few flunks – I was never in to Pull Tiger Tail if I’m being honest, and three tracks from Vincent Vincent and the Villians is a bit much, but it feels right them being on there. It’s that personal story thing, which is essentially the charm of the whole label. Just two girls putting out the music they love.
The absolute best thing though, is hearing songs I haven’t even thought about in three years and still knowing every word. Had a right lovely sing along to this album. It made me smile, and feel a bit young again. I hope Nadia and Sara feel that way forever.
