Zola Jesus Sea Talk (Souterrain Transmissions)
4/5

Nikita Danilova's subdued reworking of 'Sea Talk' from 2009's Tsar Bombs EP most certainly proves that underneath her black clad frame, she does have a soul. The layers of tasteful 80's synth overlaying Nika's heart-wrenching melody which begs the question, 'do you really know that I care?' sounds grandiose in an assuredly cinematic way.
It's the the kind of thing that could soundtrack the closing scene to a needlessly melodramatic rom-com, where two currently separated but still in love twenty-somethings reunite in the pouring rain for an enthusiastic session of smoochin'...in slow motion, obviously.
Although that makes 'Sea Talk' sound appalling, it's an epic piece of gothic pop; the kind of thing that Cher would write if she were actually a castle-dwelling gargoyle, and didn't just look like one.
