No Age – Glitter (Sub Pop)

4/5

By: Tim Robins

The first impression of the newest single, 'Glitter', from L.A noise duo No Age, is that it sounds a bit like the 80's anthem 'Hey Mickey'; all synthesised hand claps and fist-pumping drums. Throughout the song, Dean Spunt's pounding floor toms function like some kind of tribal rhythm aiming to induce hypnosis, rather than the abrasive cymbal crashes and sloppy punk chops continually present on Nouns.

Although the familiar walls of drone and surging squeals of Randy Randall's guitar are still prevalent, 'Glitter' feels like a less balls-to-the-wall effort than the majority of No Age's previous releases; a seemingly more considered, pop sensible affair which has, to an extent, pushed the layers of distortion to the back burner.

At the end of the track, Spunt murmurs 'I don't fear anything at all', and (at the risk of seeming clichéd insofar as having a contemplative, all encompassing lyric as a signoff) with 'Glitter' as Everything in Between's lead single, this mentality seems wholly appropriate.
