Super Furry Animals - 'Phantom Phorce'

Those oh-so stoned daisies of glory/Wales the Super Furry Animals don't cease to compel. Even their remix-LP of last year's class-tinged, slumbering 'Phantom Planet' comes with a twist: a running-commentary in between each and every composition from Kurt Stern, the (fictional) Yank 'executive producer' of the project ('A lovely little number here,' he drawls prior to one of the tracks; yes, it's that sorta thing).

Enlisting the aid of some of the indisputable innovators of the UK (and beyond), 'Phantom Phorce' grants us Four Tet, Mario Caldato Jr, The High Llamas, Weevil and Minotaur Shock, and another ten, contributing their jilted spins on the recent repertoire of the Furries. And, naturally, how can it falter.

Kieran Hebden's 'The Piccolo Snare' is divine, collapsing prior to its close in a blitz of burps, screeches and mechanic disruption; Massimo's 'Venus & Serena' is dubby and brooding, sporting some perilously chunky bassy synth-action; Brave Captain's 'Bleed Forever' is jaunty and more chipper than its original album-counterpart; the Caldato run-through of 'Liberty Belle' is simply intoxicating; and trip-hop has never been as searingly emotional as herein 'The Undefeated' (just wait for the strings).

Seeing as this, aside from a download/sold-at-gigs-only EP 'Slow Life' (featuring 'Motherfokker' - the band's collaboration with 'safe as f**k' Newport scallies Goldie Lookin' Chain), is the only SFA recorded-action we'll be treated to in 2004, grab, young cats - and lose your minds to the heady tones of reworked magic.
