Bjork – The Comet Song (One Little Indian)
3/5
By: Samuel Smith
Bjork’s newest tune exists apparently to soundtrack the forthcoming Moomins Feature Length Movie. In the skittish memories of my childhood, the Moomins risibly stuck out. There was always something nightmarish about the cartoon, whenever I watched it I was left with the feeling that the cutesy stop-motion characters were just a veneer for something sinister and horribly, dreadfully evil. It was as if for the 15 minutes duration the screen of our 26 inch television had been turned into a one way mirror with images projected onto it, and behind that there was something awful, dark and wholly malignant leering out from behind the pretty pictures.
Listening to this track (even without the accompanying video) leaves me with that same feeling, and that has always been something Bjork has been very good at doing - projecting one emotion in layers atop another, so that on each listen you feel as if you're scratching away to something completely different. As charming and cute as the verse's melody is - "we need milk and cakes and a warm bed" - the backing track is trying to tell us something very different, it's dissonant clatter of clarinet and dispersed tinkling xylophones tug at the hairs on the back of your neck telling you to stay away. A discomforting listen. Thanks Bjork.
