Frog Eyes – Lear In Love (Dead Oceans)

5/5

By: Samuel Smith

Usually any song that makes a direct reference to fallen kings in Shakespearian tragedies – especially this early in the morning – would be enough to make me throw up a large brick of Weetabix into my mug of Peppermint tea, but thankfully I haven't eaten any Weetabix, and Canadian band Frog Eyes' ‘Lear in Love’ presents with the right amount of lyrical cogency (i.e. very little) and melodic sanity (i.e. NONE. This man sings like someone's trying to solder his feet to his eyes) to offset the reference.

As the band thrashes out a No Age-ish sweep of spiky guitar singer Carey Mercer squeals "I am the Bad idea / I am the Gold torpedo / Dilettantes in the dark make an entrance in the dark...the bear hunter's wife fears the claws that will rake through her home / and if everyone shall judge she shall weep as a partitioned stone", somehow abstractedly summoning up both the madness of the mentioned king, and the wordless love his daughter couldn't speak.
