Antony & The Johnsons – Thank You For Your Love (Rough Trade)

3/5

By: Thomas Hannan

If you’ve ever heard an Antony and the Johnsons song and paid it even the slightest bit of attention, it’s fair to say you could probably describe to me exactly what his new one sounds like, even if you’ve not had it meet your ears thus far.

‘Thank You For Your Love’ makes little attempt to leap from the tried and tested Johnsons formula, and one has to wonder, why should it?  Possessing one of those voices means that Antony Hegarty is in the fortunate position that there just isn’t that much music in the world that sounds like his, and thus, it’s hard to begrudge him knocking out what is essentially just a little bit more of it.

Even though it’s sung with more of a smile than much of his earlier work, and is the first lead single of an Antony & The Johnsons record in five years to not be explicitly about death (unless I’m missing something?), ‘Thank You For Your Love’ is still unmistakably, and thoroughly rewardingly, the work of the only man in the world who could possibly have made it.
