Drums Of Death Generation Hexed (Greco Roman)
2/5
By: Charlie Hearn

Drums Of Death is the latest incarnation of Colin Baily, a man who more often than not finds himself on the producer’s side of a mixing desk. Having already earned his stripes on the dance scene with a mildly impressive portfolio of remixes, the second release under this particular alias is an altogether different and darker beast.
As the title suggests there is a strong shamanistic theme that runs throughout this record, casting synth ridden spells among clouds of acid house flashbacks. Generation Hexed feels like the soundtrack to a bad drug experience, pitting a concoction of fast paced highs against a backdrop of perilous lows that trail off into infinity. The production is sparse and smartly layered, providing enough breathing space to propel the projects bold imagery into the realms of possibility. It doesn’t sound rushed and there is no doubt that Baily and his team are a talented bunch behind the boards. Each song is expertly crafted and utilises a full spectrum of weird and wonderful influences.
However, there is a problem, and it’s a big problem. Aside from all the musical wizardry involved here, there is another element at play that remains prevalent throughout Generation Hexed - Colin Baily’s voice. Imagine inviting Calvin Harris and James Murphy out for a night of heavy drinking and bad karaoke singing and you’d probably bear witness to something that vaguely resembles the vocal parts on this album. Which begs the question, when an obviously gifted producer has friends like Hot Chip and Peaches, what the hell is he doing spoiling an otherwise perfectly decent record by using his own (quite frankly awful) voice?
With all this considered, the solid foundations built on an imaginative concept with precise production skills sadly turn to dust when you introduce embarrassing Scottish warbling.
